JIm's music editing workshop was great. It started at 11 am and was supposed to end at 1:30, but they were still going when I left to take Faye to the airport at 3 pm.

Some quick notes:

Jim doesn't use ITunes because of its limitations. There are several other places to go for downloading music without those, such as emusic and magnatunes.

.wav files work best for editing because mp3 files are a compressed version. Sure, .wav files are much bigger, but you get all the notes. After you edit the file the way you want it, you can save it as a mp3 for size. If you're just going to listen to the music, mp3s are great.

.wav/.mp3 files have the widest range of tones. CD tracks have less and then let's not even discuss the tonal range of tape and vinyl (and I have a few of those I was thinking of converting to CD--really sad face--they will still sound bad).

We discussed where to cut music, which songs were the easiest to cut (drums because you have clear definition of phrases), how to blend two songs, how to make a song shorter, etc.

And even if you create the best sounding CD and the sound equipment is bad at the gig, you're out of luck.

It was a very informative workshop and one I hope he repeats.

Take good notes. This information would be really good for us musicians, too.

A full moon and music editing.... what could be more fine than that?

In the past my biggest issues have been::
~~ making sure the music will be compatible and burn / play properly. Now that I itilize I-Tunes I have not even tried - because I know there are compatability issues. I've spent the time editing a peice of music only to be faced with the issue of not being able to save it.
~~ keeping the volume/sound level equal when splicing 2 or more songs together.

Will he address those issues?
Sound Forge to / from I-Tunes and then to the best format for the most playable CD??? - ( no matter the equipment you are faced with at a gig....)

That would be the most uber useful!

Just heard from Jim and the software he uses is Sony's Sound Forge Audio Studio.

You can buy it on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Sound-Forge-Audio-Studio-9/dp/B000RLP7P0) or Sony (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/audiostudio) which is actually cheaper than Amazon. You can also download a free trial from the Sony site.

The music editing workshop will start at 11 am on Sunday, June 7.

I don't know about you, but I'm excited, because there are a lot of 6 minute songs that I like.

The incredible Jim Boz is returning to Houston on June 6th and 7th, 2009, to do a benefit workshop for Sirrom School of Dance.

Saturday's workshop will focus on choreography, but Sunday's workshop is a not to be missed first of its kind music editing workshop. We've all found songs that we would love to dance to, but they are longer than the usual 5 minute solo limit for shows. Jim will show us how to pare the music down to 5 minutes while keeping its original flavor and cohesiveness. I personally can't wait.

The details will be on www.sirroms.com shortly.

BTW, there is no show with this workshop, but we can always party after the workshop.
