We are having a quick meeting then adjourning to a mini workshop Bollywood style! Then at 8:00 pm the monthly Drum Jam commences. Please join us! i called Babe's Cabaret

i'm still in California. and i just called Babe's Cabaret because . . . well, if i was in town i would have just gone to see the show, but i'm outta town for another week.

here is the scoop ::

YET says - "Hi, is the belly dance show still going on?" . . . "I heard there was belly dancing there and I've never seen belly dance before." . . . "Is it the same dancer each night?" . . . "What's her name?" . . . etc. etc.

I was told . . .
So there is ONE belly dance number on Wed and Fri nights. Her name is pronounced "Nee-Shah" (Nisha, Neesha, who knows) and the woman i spoke with did not know how to spell it. She IS s STRIPPER, she does ONE belly dance number (i dunno if she strips during this number), and does take off her clothes during her other numbers, apparently she does may types of dance. and there are "lots of dancers" there (no shit, right!), but there is only ONE person doing belly dance. and it's only ONE SONG on the nights they advertise it. so it's a stupid fucking marketing ploy.

so, i'm not currently a member of HABDA right now, but there you go Houston Area Belly Dance Association and community. if you have any info from "looking into it" let us know what else you find. the cover is $7.00 and i am not paying that to see ONE alleged belly dancer . . . well, ok, i may pay it to see the strippers, but not to see ONE belly dance number at a strip club. i can strip for my man at home for free and belly dance for myself for free to.

Belly Dancing at Babe's Cabaret

Can you believe this?

I love eating at several Indian restaurants on Hillcroft and was a bit surprise and intriqued when I saw the sign in front of Babe's Cabaret that said BELLY DANCERS . . . what the fuck? belly dancers at a strip club. no way! i thought it was a mistake or some one's bright idea to bring in customers.

THEN, in this week's Houston Press there is an ad for Babe's Cabaret indicating when their alleged belly dancers are performing.

Now, I love a good strip club. In fact, given the right company I love a bad one. And I love burlesque and the traditions of what came out of the "Poor Man's Vaudeville." But Babe's seems like a raunchy little place. And I wonder what "Belly Dancing" is going on there, true or false. Shit! I even love raunchy little places, but not for my beloved belly dancing! I couldn't find anything online about it.

I can't wait to check it out. Hahaha! Go get them BELLY DANCE POLICE!! I know you are out there!!

The Renehalla drum jam was so much fun last night! Big thanks to all the drummers and dancers that came to play with us at Avant Garden. It was fun dancing outside under the blue lights in a huge circle. Many familiar faces were there and revisiting old combos was a blast. Luna, Jen and I thank you so much for making it success!! You know a bunch of rhythms...now what? Let's get "Beyond Baladi". You will learn practical rhythm combinations useful for playing songs and making your drum circle more fun. You will also learn how to add fills and embellishments to make your playing more interesting. This workshop is perfect for anyone who already knows the basic hits and rhythms.

2:45 - 3:45 PM: How to Play a Drum Solo for a Dancer - $35

The drum solo is the climax of any belly dancer show. This is a great time for the dancer and drummer to improvise and communicate. In this workshop, you will learn how to build your own solos and improvising techniques. You will also learn what the dancer is expecting from you and how to play something interesting and exciting for them.
This workshop is perfect for drummers who know the basics. This workshop is also great for dancers to learn about the drum solo from the drummer's perspective.

Class Description: Get cheeky with Obsidia and Nari of L'imprevu! Learn vintage bellydance combos in a small class setting that will get you moving, thinking, and creating your own combos! You will be introduced to L'imprevu combos that have been adapted for soloists, partners, and groups of three or more. Come to the class as a soloist, with your dance partner, or with your entire troupe, as this format is deisgned for everyone! Participants will walk away from this workshop with usable, adaptable combos for every style of bellydance. Notes will be provided. Dancers should have at least six months of instruction to attend. Vintage Bellydance Combos for Soloists, Partners, and Troupes

Class Description:
Get cheeky with Obsidia and Nari of L'imprevu! Learn vintage bellydance combos in a small class setting that will get you moving, thinking, and creating your own combos! You will be introduced to L'imprevu combos that have been adapted for soloists, partners, and groups of three or more. Come to the class as a soloist, with your dance partner, or with your entire troupe, as this format is deisgned for everyone! Participants will walk away from this workshop with usable, adaptable combos for every style of bellydance. Notes will be provided. Dancers should have at least six months of instruction to attend. Space is limited, so sign up soon to get a spot and take advantage of the early bird special!

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your show of support over the last few days. I've been reading your messages over the last day or so, but I haven't been in a position to respond.

My grandma is not doing well. Once the the doctors had a chance to scan her, they also found two advanced stage brain tumors, which was the cause of the stroke. Yesterday, hospice brought her home and basically they'll be helping her live out her last days in as much comfort as possible.

My family is doing pretty well considering. Your prayers and positive energy have been felt and appreciated so much.

I was suppose to perform at Avant Garden tonight, but I'll be on my way to Beaumont soon to be with my family.

My grandma had a massive stroke last night and I just heard about it minutes ago and I'm packing to leave in a few moments.

I don't have Nari's number but I have emailed her, if you are at Avant Garden tonight please tell her in case she doesn't get my email in time.

I will be in town from Dallas to dance with Nari as L'imprevu, Anaid of Mystique Belly Dance is here from San Antonio, and the local dancers will knock your zills off! Vagabond Bellydance at Avant Garden

Hello Beautiful Bellydancers!

I am hosting Vagabond Bellydance community haflas begining April 15th at Avant Garden and would love for you to dance! You may dance solo or with your troupe, whichever you prefer. Also, if you have students who would like to perform that night, please let me know. I want to help foster a caring, safe place for all level dancers to perform, which is why I chose Avant Garden.
Vagabond Bellydance will also feature dancers from around the state in 2008, including Obsidia of L'imprevu (May), Visions In Dance (July), BellaNatana (TBD), and Michelle Manx (TBD). This is ALWAYS an open call!

THE APRIL SHOW IS FULL! There are only six spots left for the May 20th show, so sign up soon!

Live Musicians (drummers, oud, violin, cello,etc...) are also welcome to perform, with or without dancers. Perhaps a drum jam will ensue after the show?

I know my son is the light of my life and everything I am, do and strive for are because of and for him. I can't even recall what life was like before he was here.

I hope all of the Moms out there have a wonderful day with your baby (s), hug them tight and cherish them-for you are their everything...

I thought I'd start one of my own today....

I’m thankful for being able to dance with my best friend of over a decade; that even though we’ve had good times and rough times (we call that the Dark Times), there’s always been that deep sisterly love underneath it all.

I’m thankful to know and come in contact with so many amazing people, dancers, souls. That I’m inspired by facets of every individual I come in contact with.

I’m thankful that I’ve finally reached a point in life where I am mature enough to see drama when it unfolds and courageously ignore and rise above it.

I am thankful that I have finally taken to heart this Buddhist saying “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned.” and applying it to every facet of my life.

I am thankful to have a passion that brings me joy, allows me to sing with my own unique voice and share my love of this art form called bellydance with the world.

Now that I’ve shared my thankfulness, what are YOU thankful for?

Carmiiiiine!!!

I'm so excited!!! Carmine Guida is coming to Houston... :)

The day after the Vashti dance workshop, we have a Carmine DRUM workshop!! Two hours of classes and an informal hafla afterward. Dance From the Heart has put together our first Artist in Residence workshop, in an effort to further our multi-cultural educational mission.

The classes will take place at DFTH's favorite rehearsal spot - the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, on June 29th. Classes from 1:30 - 3:30... Hafla from 4 - 5:30. Details and registration will be up on the website tonight: www.dfth.org

News from Silvia! Yay! I'm going to perfrom in Europe!

New number one! I have been invited to teach two workshops and perform at Oriental Dream 2008 (Amsterdam, the Netherlans), sponsored by Halima, the upcoming June 20th -22nd!! The exciting part? Apart of my first international workshop, the rest of the teachers in the event are Jillina, Rachel Brice and Mardi Love! So I promise to take lots of pictures and post them! UG Level I Comprehnesive Reiew...

By Popular demand we will be offering a mini-workshop to review all the Urban Gypsy moves taught during the 16 week Level I rotation!

When? Saturday May 30th from 1pm to 4 pm.

Where? At Urban Gypsy headquarters: Bayou Park Fitness Center (4400 Memorial Drive-Shepherd at Memorial)

Who? Zymirrah and Silvia will be reviewing, correcting form and posture (yes, you will be sore!) and exploring the dynamics of tribal formations during this short-but intense review workshop. You will get the 'big picture'... i.e. see how the UG improv vocab all fits together.

How much? 40$.

This is a REVIEW! Therefore, we require that all students have taken the level I series at "some point" in their lives... which means even if
it's been a while.... if you have been missing us, now is your opportunity to jump back in, review and even discover some of the
upgrades of the vocabulary!

"They, Who Sound"
is a new weekly event offering (mostly regional) voices in experimental/ improvised/underground sound/noise/music/ "musique bruit"

This event will be held at The Backroom (The Space Behind The Mink).
It's at 3718 Main Street @Alabama
(Backroom entrance is on Alabama).

will be held every Sunday in May and June (except for June 22) at 6pm.

$5 cover goes to the musicians.

It's early on Sunday.
It's casual and relaxed.
It's on the train.
There's a bar.

You like music (and there is a lot of it going on that you don't know about).

There will be two sets every week.

Wanna go see some some dancing??? The Tribal Lillies are hosting ( Hey ladies!) & some of the UG ladies are dancing in other projects that I can't wait to see... ... and ??? Who else?

What fun! This is a great public out-reach to those that don't often get to see our dance - represent ladies! WOOOT!
I'l be out there there cheering them on and soaking up some African dance too - I heard there are some freakin'aweinspiring performers representing Africa!

What a fun show last night!!!! Everyone was on FIRE! So much positive energy was filling the venue that my arm hairs were standing on end. Thank you so much to the Lilies and Mahalla for dancing with us, we are so blessed to have you in our lives.

Angela and Ronnie thanks for coming to support us and see the craziness.

Cynthia, it was great to see your smiling face at every spin (yes I spotted on you, te he:) thanks for being there, muah!!

Chris you are so sweet to show up and take pictures we love it that you are there. We really appreciate your artist eye.

Mariko, I miss you and was so happy to that you could show up. (Fair is only 5 months away)

The next 4 week session begins this week! Yusefina ( yusefina.com/Gallery.html ) will be teaching a BRAND NEW Tribal'esque Choreography... It is an emotive choreography inspired by tabla, sitar, and the mystery behind the veil. There will be a strong focus on maintaining energy throughout the arms, hands, and fingers while moving with grace and strength. Bring a veil to class.

It is absolutely suitable for group or solo performance......Everyone in the class (who is interested in putting it on the stage) will be invited to perform this piece at an upcoming Banjaran Salon at Avant Garden... how fun is that?

NO need to know the UG vocabulary or have any tribal background at all to take this series of classes!!

Just bring your smile and knowledge of belly dance basics with you!

The series of four (4) 90 minute classes is $70.. drop ins are $20. No need to pre-register. Please show up 5 minutes early for your first class to sign up. (Cash or check only, please.)

I am looking for REAL Theatre spaces in and around Houston..& as far away as Galveston... It is such a joy to offer performers a theater space to perform in - just a wonderful vibe for productions...

Yes this is for workshop / show type events....
1st we find a theatre.. then we look for dance spaces near there... and a host hotel etc...

Your Assistance is Needed!

Hello All,

Some but not all of you may have seen my Blog regarding the major overhaul I’m doing to my Town home. As if that wasn’t enough to deal with, I just found out that my AC Unit is completely shot! I will need a totally new AC Unit for the patio area and cannot get away with just repairing the Compressor. I have been given 2 quotes.
1 is $1,700.00 & the other $1,600.00. YIKES!!!

As a single Mom, doing all the renovations to this place by myself, a new AC unit is totally out of the question. Been having some great weather lately but I’m a native Houstonian and I know my time is running out!

If any one knows ANYBODY in the Houston or surrounding area, that can assist me in getting a new AC unit at a lower cost (wholesale or better) please contact me immediately! If I can get that much done, maybe I can find a way to get darn thing installed. Many thanks for your assistance and much gratitude…….

April 15th- the FIRST EVER Vagabond Bellydance hafla hosted by Nari!!

April 27th- Nari is dancing at IFest, doing a duet with Nina of Urban Gypsy AND a solo!!!!!! Go see her at the Sisters City Stage at 5:30 pm

May 20th- 2nd Vagabond Bellydance hafla with L'imprevu Bellydance (yup, I'll be back in H town!)

May 24th- Obsidia will be representing L'imprevu at the Kismet show in Carrollton

June 28th- L'imprevu will be performing at the Crescent Moon June Hafla at the Rose Marine Theater

June 29th- L'imprevu will host a mini workshop at Obsidia's studio, Vagabond Salon, in Bedford TX (subject/info TBA)

My Schools Carnival

Hello Ladies and Gents

My school I teach it is having a Carnival (annual) on May 12th. The last few years I thot, we need entertainment! So this year they will have entertainment. It will be on our stage...A/C!! =D It's from 10:30-3:30.

I just want to put a call out if anyone would love to help me entertain k-5th graders and staff =D I will perform, I'm tryin to get my dance students to do our choreography with me =D and I thot it would be fun to have other talented dancers to come.

It is a family carnival, sorry you Carnnies ;), so no midriffing allowed ;p

You can do any style you would like...I just wanted to bring a little more diversity to my school.

I think some traditional Indian or Bhangra would be cool.

Let me know if you want to perform for this loverly bunch of kiddos!?!

Come join Sirrom (www.sirrom.com) in supporting and cheering on the walkers for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer this Saturday, April 12th.
We are looking for volunteers to help us cheer on the participants who are raising money and awareness for such an important cause. Beginner to advanced - all levels of dancers are welcome- just looking for a lot of great attitudes and enthusiasm. We would LOVE to have some drummers as well!
